SOUTHBURY — Two of the best girls basketball teams in the South-West Conference meet Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Frank Sippy Gymnasium when 14-3 Pomperaug hosts 15-3 Newtown.

The game will also be a fundraiser for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Yow was head coach of North Carolina State women’s basketball and a Naismith Hall of Fame inductee who died of cancer in 2009 at 66.

The fight against cancer became personal for the Pomperaug girls when Sue Fortier, wife of head coach Joe Fortier, was diagnosed with breast cancer before the start of the season. The team has rallied around the Fortier family and decided to hold this cancer awareness game.

In addition to attending the game, fans can donate to the fight against cancer at the Play4Kay website. Visit the Pomperaug team page at support.kayyow.com/team/148712. To date, the Panthers have raised more than $1,700 for the Play4Kay Foundation.

Northwestern girls lock up BL championship

By STEVE BARLOW

WINSTED – The Northwestern High girls basketball team understood exactly what was at stake Friday night: a Berkshire League championship.

The Highlanders had already clinched at least a tie for the title, but they were in no mood to share as they took the floor against crosstown rival Gilbert, especially not after suffering their first loss of the season three days earlier.

So Northwestern came out and stomped on the Yellowjackets right from the start en route to a 51-39 victory that sewed up the program’s 11th BL title overall and first since 2004.
“That’s really exciting,” said Morgan Daley, one of three seniors on the team. “For me personally, that was my senior goal. I haven’t been on a team that’s won a BL championship. I am ecstatic.”

The Highlanders (17-1 overall, 15-1 BL) said they came out flat against Nonnewaug on Tuesday, which led to a 45-35 defeat. They made sure there would be no repeat Friday by taking a 21-9 lead in the first quarter.

“We came out with a chip on our shoulder,” said senior Gina Weingart, who scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. “We knew we had the league title on the line. We wanted to play well in front of the big crowd and get the lead right away. The loss motivated us.”

Daley had 11 points and six rebounds for Northwestern, while Emma Propfe also had six rebounds. Senior guard Addie Hester dealt seven assists.

Jill Wexler led Gilbert (10-8, 9-7 BL) with 18 points and sister Liz added 11. Despite being without flu-stricken starter Marcela Moreira, the Yellowjackets managed to trim the deficit to 45-39 with 3:30 left in the game, but ran out of gas.

Northwestern coach Fred Williams, in his 40th season, said the BL championship is special because it ends a 13-year drought for a program that won eight straight in the 1980s and ‘90s.

“The three seniors have been with me a long time. They have really gotten us to where we are,” said Williams of Hester, Weingart and Daley.

When the season tipped off, Williams knew he had a contender on his hands, but his team might have been more confident it could win the league than he was.

“The kids did. I thought we’d been in the running,” Williams said. “Most coaches in the league though the winner might have three or four losses. We had several games where we won by five points or under, so we could have four losses.

“It’s been so long (since the 2004 title), it’s nice to get back to the top.”

Dunn reaches 2,000-point mark in Westover rout

Westover School’s Gabbie Dunn scored her team’s first seven points and it was just a glimpse of what would be as the senior eclipsed the 2,000-career point total on a 3-pointer early in the second half Saturday in Middlebury.
Dunn scored 38 points and now has 2,014 points. She added 10 rebounds, eight steals and four blocks in Westover’s 63-35 win over Capital Prep Harbor.
Westover improved to 8-5.
“Gabbie is an exceptional talent who has worked tremendously hard all four years here,” said Westover coach Marty Pelosi. “She really is fun to watch. It was great to see her team really step up against a much taller Capital Prep team. It was fitting that her teammates set two strong screens to free her for the shot that got her 2,000.
“It was a wonderful atmosphere at Westover this afternoon, and the crowd was great as well.”
The only other local player to score more than 2,000 points is Naugatuck High’s Jessica Mudry. Her all-time Naugatuck Valley League best total was 2,056.
The all-time leading scorer in the Berkshire League is Wamogo’s Tracy Stolle. Her final career total was 1,924.

It was a momentous day for Westover senior Gabbie Dunn Saturday as she accomplished something extremely rare: she surpassed the 2,000-point level in high school basketball.

Dunn joined an elite group as just the eighth female basketball player in NESPAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) history to reach 2,000 points.

Furthermore, she is just the second area player to reach this historic milestone,  joining Naugatuck’s Jessica Mudry.

The all-time leader in CIAC girls play is Tracy Lis of Killingly, who scored an incredible 3,681 points in her four years. Mudry finished at 2,056.

Girls teams chase final wins with tourneys looming

$

By JOE PALLADINO

We made it. We have arrived at the postseason for girls basketball. Sure, there are regular season games to play, but some of those games are elimination games, and that is postseason stuff.

For example: Tonight, the Cheshire girls play at Lauralton Hall. The Rams are 7-12. They need this win to get into the SCC tournament. All eight-win teams qualify. Also, Cheshire is currently sitting in the Class LL field, as the 31 seed, and could get in with seven victories, maybe.

The SCC girls tourney tips off on Thursday night.

The South-West Conference begins on Friday night, and Pomperaug will play at home, 7 p.m., against an opponent to be determined.

#23 Claudine Logato of Pomperaug High launches a shot for the 3-point line against Wilton during basketball action in Southbury Saturday.

The Berkshire and Naugatuck Valley tournaments tip Saturday. In the BL there is drama left. League champ Northwestern is the No. 1 seed, but the eight seed is an open question. Shepaug Valley has a one game edge on Litchfield and needs one victory, against Wamogo or Gilbert, to clinch that seed. Litchfield must beat Thomaston and Lewis Mills, and hope the Spartans lose twice.

The BL plays first-round games on Saturday in the gym of the higher seed.

The NVL has limited drama as well. Holy Cross will secure the top seed if it beats Wilby and Crosby. St. Paul Catholic could still tie Cross, and the Falcons earn No. 1 via a tiebreak, if they get there.

The only drama is in the chase for eighth place. Waterbury Career Academy is 7-9 (NVL games only) and currently the eight seed, but there are three teams at 6-10: Woodland, Oxford and Watertown.

WCA plays Kennedy and Wilby. Win both and the Spartans are in. Woodland plays Torrington and Seymour; Oxford has Wolcott, Ansonia; Watertown meets Naugatuck, Torrington.

And just for fun: Ansonia, Torrington, and Derby are 5-11 and could conceivably tie WCA. The Spartans hold the tiebreak on all three, I believe. This is why NVL tournament guru, Holy Cross athletic director Jerry Ciarleglio, is grumpy this time of the year. Actually, there are many contributing factors, but tournament stuff is one of them.

A note on NVL girls: All first-round games are at Holy Cross on Saturday, and first game tips at 11 a.m. Other game times: 12:45 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m. Tickets are $5.

Another note: The NVL does it right. Playing four games at one site ratchets up tournament excitement. Fans and teams flow in and out of the gym. Hoop junkies stay all day. Nothing wrong with a higher seed getting a home game, but, it feels like just another game. Put four games at one site and you have a true tournament event.

Let’s look at CIAC scenarios

Class LL: Cheshire is in with a win against winless Lauralton Hall.

Class L: Only 25 schools currently have the prerequisite eight wins. Seven-win teams have a shot to get in to the 32-team field. But, why make it close? Still needing one to qualify is Watertown. The Indians are likely in even with seven.

Class M: It looks as though teams will need that eighth win. Ansonia is on seven, and plays St. Paul and Oxford and, by the way, Oxford is also at seven, and the Wolverines play Wolcott. That Chargers-Wolverines game on Thursday could be a doozy. Woodland has seven wins, and plays Torrington and Seymour.

Class S: There are a load of teams on the brink, and a few might slip in with seven wins. The pressure is on Derby and Shepaug. The Red Raiders, with six wins, must beat Seymour and St. Paul for eight. Ouch. Shepaug must beat Wamogo and Gilbert. This is a challenge.

Yes, we have regular season games to play, but we have arrived at win-or-go-home games for girls. That means the tourney is upon us.

Dunn gives credit to many for huge milestone

All hail Gabbie Dunn. The Westover School senior scored career point No. 2,000 on Saturday in a victory over Capital Prep Harbor.

Dunn, of Watertown, scored 38 in the 63-35 victory. Her career total, the most ever at Westover, is currently 2,018.

When Dunn hit a 3-point basket early in the second half to hit 2,000 she felt “a sense of relief. I was a little bit nervous. For 1,000 I wasn’t, but I was for 2,000 because everyone was coming to the game. But as soon as game started my nerves were gone, and as soon as I let go of the shot I knew it was going in, finally.”

Dunn credits her success to her father, Kevin, and mother, Iris.

“I wouldn’t be as good as I am today without my dad,” she said. “He pushed me hard in the gym, and always encouraged me to go out and shoot. Both my parents have been very supportive.”

She also acknowledges coaches Dave Mecca, at St. Mary Magdalen in Oakville, and Westover coach Marty Pelosi. “He allowed me to play my game,” Dunn said. “He helped me get 1,000, and then he helped me get another 1,000.”
