Wolcott’s Barnes, Naugy’s Peterson bonded by injuries

BY JASON LEVY
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
The pain was all too familiar for Wolcott junior Mary Louis Barnes when she saw Naugatuck senior Alyssa Peterson go down with an injury.
Barnes is working her way back from dual knee injuries, tearing the ACL, MCL and meniscus in her right knee in eighth grade and re-injuring the knee during a bike accident on vacation, forcing her to miss her entire freshman and sophomore seasons.
“It’s hard, I don’t think people really get it, but it’s hard,” Barnes said. “You have to put in a lot of work. The first time was six to seven months of recovery, going to physical therapy. The second time was about nine to 10 months, and now I have to wear a brace to play.”
Barnes plays for both the junior varsity and varsity teams this season, wracking up more JV minutes as she works her way back. Wolcott coach Marty Dituccio expects her to be an off-court leader next year as the team’s only senior.
“It’s her determination, she’s here every day in practice, she takes part in all the drills,” he said. “She doesn’t ask for anything. She’s never like ‘Coach, I can’t do this.’ She just goes and does what she has to do.”
Peterson was working her own way back after tearing the ACL in each of her knees, making steady progress over the course of the season. But while she was boxing out during a 53-40 win over Wolcott on Jan. 16, Peterson suffered an injury to her right knee. An MRI on Jan. 20 revealed a torn graft meniscus in her right knee, ending her season and Naugy career.
Greyhounds coach Gail Cheney said that it was “not fair” that a Peterson had another obstacle thrown at her.
“She was getting more minutes as the year went on,” Cheney said. “She was gaining confidence and had a killer move during a win against Watertown (on Jan. 12).”
Peterson has received well wishes from her friends, family and teammates, and more. Barnes reached out on social media and former Naugatuck football, baseball and swimming star Branden Heller, who suffered a labrum injury during a swim season, sent her a note of encouragement.
“I am absolutely heartbroken that this happened again,” Peterson said via text message after learning the results of the MRI. “But I’ve been through this before and I have to keep believing that everything happens for a reason.”
She has a kindred spirit in Barnes, who had an optimistic message for anyone going through a long-term injury.
“Just know that there’s people out there to support you, and it gets better,” Barnes said. “People come out stronger, that’s my perspective.”

Raven lifts Wolcott over WCA

WATERBURY — The kids like to say, step up. That’s what happens when you do your job in a big moment. You step up.

Raven Cody stepped up. The Wolcott High senior hit back-to-back 3-point field goals in the fourth quarter, and then with her team trailing by a point with six seconds to play, Cody sank two free throws to lift the Eagles to a wild 43-40 victory over Waterbury Career Academy on Tuesday night at Career.

Cody finished with a game-high 25 points and six rebounds, and she helped the Eagles (8-6, 8-5 NVL) to a key victory as NVL teams jostle for a league playoff berth. And by the way, she now has 997 career points too. She will seek number 1,000 on Friday night at home against Torrington.

“We are just never going to give up,” Cody said. “We’re just going to keep coming at you, no matter what.”

That same thought, incidentally, fits WCA. The teams are the seventh and eighth seeds, currently, in the NVL, and both needed this victory to secure that tourney berth.

The Eagles were in total command, with a lead of 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-9 with 3:38 to play in the first half. But, the Spartans (8-7, 7-6 NVL) come at you too.

“The Spartans fought hard,” said senior Armani Weaver, who led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds. “That’s how we came back. We executed all over the floor, we pounded it in, took great shots, but you can’t win them all. We went out there and we fought hard.”

WCA did not make a field goal until Kendra McPherson, who scored 12, hit a put-back basket with 80 seconds left in the first half. But it was a crazy second half that brought the teams back together. Weaver hit two 3-pointers in the third, and another early in the fourth to lift the Spartans to a 31-29 lead.

Cody answered for Wolcott with 3-pointers at 4:16 and 3:33. McPherson scored off the glass, Alyssah Chouinard hit a driving hoop for WCA, and then McPherson gave the Spartans the lead, 40-39, with another rebound hoop, then a free throw, with 15.1 seconds to play.

That’s when Cody stepped up. Fouled with six seconds to play, she seemed nervous as she huddled with the team during a time out.

“I was definitely nervous,” Cody said. “After I hit the first one I was like, OK, we can go into overtime and we’ll be fine, but, I got that lucky roll, so, we’re good.”

Alayna Greene added two more free throws with one second on the clock, and that was it. The Eagles won. They stepped up.

Woodland girl rejoins team after brain surgery

Woodland girls basketball coach Jessica Moffo with sophomore guard Danie Meder. (Steve Barlow RA)

By STEVE BARLOW

Gina Meder was sitting in a waiting room at Yale-New Haven Hospital when a doctor walked in with some CT scan results and a couple of questions.

Pointing to Gina’s daughter, Danie, then 5, he asked, “Can she walk?”

“Yes,” replied Meder, puzzled by the query.

An incredulous look on his face, the doctor asked a follow-up: “And she can talk?”

“Yes,” Meder repeated.

“Amazing,” the doctor said.

Danie Meder, now 15, was born missing more than one-third of her brain. She lacks one-half of her left hemisphere, which usually controls logic and speech, and 20 percent of her right hemisphere, which usually controls creativity and the arts. The left side of the brain normally controls the right side of the body and vice-versa.

Yet her brain has adjusted, taught itself new skills, and the 5-foot-3 sophomore at Woodland High now plays soccer and basketball for the Hawks.

Yes, she is amazing.

Born in China, Danie was adopted as a baby by George and Gina Meder of Beacons Falls, who didn’t realize their daughter’s condition until she had an epileptic seizure at the age of 5, which prompted the visit to Yale-New Haven.

As she has gotten older, the seizures have worsened. Sometimes, they last minutes; sometimes they last an hour, or even longer.

“She sometimes has seizures all night,” Gina said, “then she gets up in the morning and goes to school.”

But the Meders have not held their daughter back because of this. She began playing youth soccer at age 6 and youth basketball at 8. When Danie became a freshman at Woodland, her parents asked soccer coach Cait Witham and basketball coach Jessica Moffo if she could be on the high school teams.

Moffo said there was “no way” they could possibly say no, and Danie now plays guard for the Woodland junior varsity basketball squad and goalie for the JV soccer team.

“Our motto is ‘Team is family.’ She is part of our family and we’re going to be there for her. If we can put a smile on her face, then we’ve done our part,” Moffo said.

With the seizures continuing to worsen, Danie returned to Yale-New Haven on Jan. 9 for eight hours of surgery. A robotic arm, nicknamed “Rosa” and programmed by neurologists, drilled 12 holes in her skull and implanted electrodes to try to locate the source of the seizures.

Over the next six days, the sensors enabled doctors to map her brain, determining which parts of it control certain functions. Another operation Jan. 15 removed the sensors. The hope is that doctors can figure out how to repair the part of the brain causing the seizures, while not impairing Danie’s speech and motor skills.

She left the hospital Jan. 18 and attended the Hawks’ game the next night against WCA. Before the opening tip, teammates escorted her to midcourt, where she received an ovation from the fans.

Danie returned to school and practice last week, and got in near the end of the Hawks’ JV game against Holy Cross on Monday night.

This Friday night, Woodland’s home game against Watertown has been designated as a fundraiser to benefit epilepsy awareness.

“I want the girls on the team to know there’s more to life than sports,” said Moffo, who, along with junior guard Hana Bojka, visited Danie in the hospital and brought her a gift basket from the team.

“It was nice. It was a lot of stuff, a lot of candy,” remarked Danie, who said she missed being on the team while in the hospital.

A special needs student, Danie has a paraprofessional who assists her during the school day, and her mother attends practices in case there are any issues. If Danie has a seizure, she is simply taken off the court to one side. When she’s ready to return, she goes back in, her mom explained.

“No kid should have to go through what she does,” said Moffo. “And in my opinion, her parents are the Parents of the Decade.”

“The coaches have been tremendous her whole life. They are so good to her,” Gina said. “I would’ve quit a long time ago. Danie never has. She loves this. She has always wanted to play.”

By STEVE BARLOW

WINSTED – The Northwestern High girls basketball team survived its biggest scare of the season Friday night before managing to outlast Lewis Mills, 42-36, in overtime at home.

The Highlanders (16-0, 14-0 Berkshire League) needed a last-second miss by Mills in regulation to get to the extra period, where they built a six-point lead and then made enough plays in the final minutes to hold on.

“Honestly, it wasn’t one of our best games. There were things we could’ve done better,” said senior guard Emma Propfe. “But overall I’m proud that we got out with the win.”

Propfe made several contributions in the final minutes, making a steal, rebounding her own missed foul shot and finally sinking a free throw with 35 seconds left to give Northwestern a 40-36 lead.

She finished with 10 points, as did Gina Weingart and Addie Hester. Propfe also had 13 rebounds and five assists, and Hester grabbed eight rebounds.

Sammi Chadwick had a game-high 12 points for the Spartans (8-8, 8-6), who only lost to Northwestern by three, 35-32, in their first meeting.

Gabbie Dunn was the first basketball player ever at The Westover School to score 1,000 points. It was only the beginning.

Dunn, who reached 1,000 in the first week of her junior season at Westover, is now on the brink of 2,000 points. The senior guard begins play this week with 1,976 career points. Needing only 24 points to reach 2,000, Dunn has

two home games this week. The Wildcats host Hopkins School of New Haven on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Searle Gymnasium, and then Capital Prep Harbor School of Bridgeport comes to Middlebury on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“What Gabbie has done here is historic,” said Westover coach Marty Pelosi, “from an offensive point of view. But what I love about Gabbie is that she brings the same intensity to the defensive side of the ball. She works hard all the time. You want your team leader to lead by example, and Gabbie is certainly that kind of person. She gives you everything she has, all the time.”

The only other local player to score more than 2,000 points is Naugatuck High’s Jessica Mudry. Her all-time Naugatuck Valley League best total is 2,056. The all-time leading scorer in the Berkshire League is Wamogo’s Tracy Stolle. Her final career total is 1,924.

Dunn’s career average with Westover is 23.7 ppg. As a junior she averaged 27.9.

“This kid is better than anyone I have ever seen at creating her own offense,” said Pelosi, who coached Mudry when she played in the Pearl Street summer league; and coached against Mudry when he was the head coach at Watertown High. “It is fun to watch Gabbie play, and it has been fun to watch her develop and grow, right from the first time I saw her play at St. Mary Magdalen.”

Chase Collegiate girls making late season move

TThe Chase Collegiate girls basketball team has won five of its last six to improve to 7-6 overall and 6-2 in the Hudson Valley Athletic Conference with two huge league games on the horizon.
The Highlanders visit first-place Master’s in Simsbury on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and then host second-place Harvey next Monday at 4 p.m. at the Chase’s Goss Fieldhouse in Waterbury.
On Friday, Chase had to rally from eight points down with four minutes left before a 12-2 run closed out a 43-41 win over Christian Heritage. Freshman forward Maddie Patrick scored eight points in the final stretch.
“This game gave the kids a lot of confidence,” said Chase coach Bill Maisto. “We had 400 spectators at the game and the place was electric. It was such a fun atmosphere. Overall, we’re moving the ball so well on offense right now. We’re transitioning down the court. That helps us with a lot more layups.”
Chase senior co-captain Sam Crone and senior co-captain Sam Dassatti, along with sophomore Phoebe DeRiu-Crowley and Patrick, “can all handle the ball and push the ball up the court,” according to Maisto. “Our offense is all coming from our defense. We’re getting a lot of steals and lots of layups.”

Who’s hot

The Oxford High girls basketball team is on the verge of a qualifying for the state tournament having won six in a row following their 42-30 win over Derby Friday. After a 1-9 start in the first half, the Wolverines are now 7-9 overall, 6-8 in the Naugatuck Valley League. The Wolverines play host to St. Paul Tuesday and visit Seymour Friday and will need one win in its final four regular-season games to qualify. Oxford is 2-3 in the Copper Division and tied with Derby in the division. Nora Curley is in her first season as head coach at Oxford.

More hoop notes: Olsen out tonight; kick cancer’s butt at Pomperaug

Here are a few more high school hoop notebook items:

We were curious on the availability of Holy Cross star Nyzair Rountree for the game tonight at McDonald Gymnasium against Waterbury Career Academy. Rountree may be back this week after a bad ankle sprain last week against Bassick.

But definitely out tonight is head coach Ryan Olsen. He must sit for one game after he picked up two technical fouls in the victory last Friday over Kennedy.

But can he even be in the gymnasium?

“I don’t think so,” Olsen said, “but no one has given me any real explanation.”

Olsen’s comment on the game and the incident came, unfortunately, in a garbled transmission.

Filling in as head man tonight is long-time HC assistant John Egan, who is also the Cross golf coach. Remarkably, Egan has never had to fill in for former head coach and sublime ref-baiter Ed Generali.

“They wouldn’t throw ‘G’ out,” said Egan.

Egan’s career record for boys basketball is 0-0. This should be entertaining.

Get out to Pomperaug: If you seek a game to watch Friday night, head out to the Frank Sippy Gymnasium at Pomperaug High when the girls host Newtown High. Besides it being a splendid SWC game, the evening is a fundraiser for the Kay Yow Foundation and the fight against cancer.

Yow was the head coach of North Carolina State women’s basketball and a Naismith Hall of Fame inductee who died of cancer in 2009 at age 66.

The cancer fight became a personal one for the Panthers when Sue Fortier, wife of head coach Joe Fortier, was diagnosed with breast cancer before the start of the season. The team has rallied around the Fortier family, and on Friday they will host the cancer awareness game.

You can help in the effort by attending the game, a 7 p.m. tip, and you can also donate to the cause at the Play for Kay website. Visit the Pomperaug team page there at support.kayyow.com/team/148712.

But most importantly, get out to the Pomp-O-Dome Friday, cheer on the Panthers, or Newtown if you’d like, and help, as the Panthers’ page said, “Kick cancer’s butt.”
