The Sacred Heart junior hit the mats at Crosby High just after 11 a.m. for the NVL cheerleading championship. When the routine ended, she had to bolt over to Holy Cross High as the Hearts were getting ready to play Seymour in the NVL tournament quarterfinals at 12:45 p.m.

“I woke up at 5:30 (Saturday) morning, and I got ready to go to my (cheerleading) competition at Crosby,” Coleman said. “That’s a longer process then the basketball. I had to sit there and wait a while, it was tiring too. Then I competed and I had to come straight from cheerleading, drive over (to Holy Cross) quick, get here for (noon) and get ready to play and warm up.”

Coleman’s lack of energy after the cheer competition was evident on the basketball court. She picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter, and a third early in the second quarter. After resting on the bench, she stepped up in the second half. Coleman scored 14 of her team-leading 20 points in the fourth quarter (to go with seven steals and three assists) in a 71-49 win.

“It’s very tiring, I had to go to bed really early,” Coleman said. “(For) cheerleading I was wide awake, but then as soon as I came to (Holy Cross), the first quarter I was just tired. I think that’s why I got those fouls. I got my rest on the bench and I came back in and just did what I had to do.”

Sacred Heart cheerleading coach Michelle Mattaboni considers Coleman a valuable asset due to her athleticism and infectious positive attitude.

“She has so much natural talent that she just loves to be out here performing, so she’s up and ready to go whenever we tell her to,” Mattaboni said. “So to go from cheerleading to basketball, that’s easy for her.”

Coleman has been playing basketball and cheerleading since she was six, but Saturday was the first time she had to do both on the same day. She considers cheerleading a riskier sport.

“I’m a flyer, so I’m up in the air and you have to depend on someone to catch you – you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Coleman said. “Basketball is a contact sport, but you can avoid (the contact). In cheerleading you really cant.”

Chiefs top Mountaineers on 3rd try

Third time was the charm for Nonnewaug girls basketball.
After a pair of double-digit losses to Housatonic during the regular season, the third-seeded Chiefs topped the No. 2 seed Mountaineers, 47-40, in the Berkshire League tournament semifinals at Thomaston High on Tuesday night.
Nonnewaug will play No. 1 Northwestern in the final 7 p.m. Friday at Thomaston.
Nonnewaug coach Adam Brutting credited several players, including Victoria Maclean, Mary Bibbey, Jen Charette, Abby Scheurich and Maddie Woodward, for stepping up at various points of the contest.
“It was one of the goals all season to compete and be better and put ourselves in position for a championship and we did that, so it’s great,” Brutting said.
Charette scored a team-high 14 points, Maclean chipped in 11 and Bibbey netteed 10 to lead Nonnewaug. Bibbey was happy to share the win with her fellow senior Charette.
“It feels pretty darn great,” Bibbey said. “We’ve been playing together for so long that to be at this level where it comes to the end of the season and to go this far is really exciting.”
“Especially not playing our best the first two games against (Housatonic) and then really bringing it this game really felt good,” Charette added.
Housatonic looks to bounce back from the loss when the Class S tournament starts next week. The brackets have yet to be announced, but Housatonic coach Steve Dodge has an idea of what’s in store for his team, according to the state rankings.
“We face an extremely tough Weaver team in the first round,” Dodge said. “It’s a little unfortunate with that draw, but we’re going to come out fighting.”
Nonnewaug still has one more Berkshire game to focus on. The Chiefs were the only team to defeat the Highlanders this season. Brutting will have his team prepared for Friday.
“We will watch some of the tape and look at some of the things that worked and make some adjustments on some of the things that didn’t work,” Brutting said.

Sacred Heart girls capture elusive NVL title

BY JASON LEVY

WATERBURY — No matter who won Wednesday night, a long Naugatuck Valley League championship drought was set to be broken. When the dust settled, the Sacred Heart High girls basketball team earned a win four decades in the making.

The fourth-seeded Hearts took an early lead and held on for dear life for a 44-37 victory over No. 3 Naugatuck at Kennedy High’s Jack Taglia Gymnasium for their first NVL title since 1976.

“I think the (Sacred Heart) administration is more excited than I am,” coach Ron Picard said.

Tournament MVP Treasure Coleman was the driving force for the Hearts (18-5). After being held scoreless in the first quarter, she finished with a game-high 18 points, along with 10 rebounds (five offensive) and six steals. Aamya Rivera added 12 points.

“I was a little tired, to be honest, but I woke up once the game started,” Coleman said. “In the moment, I was just trying to get in every play, running all over the place and doing what I had to do.”

Bridget Rosikiewicz helped the Greyhounds (19-4) stay in the NVL final with 15 points and 11 boards (five offensive).

Sacred Heart led by as much as 26-14 with five minutes left in the third quarter while Naugy got as close as 27-22 with 1:19 remaining in the frame. The Greyhounds never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter.

“I’m pretty impressed that as good a team Sacred Heart is, we held them (to 44 points),” Naugatuck coach Gail Cheney said. “I thought we played really well. Our shots weren’t falling in the first half, but this is the first time that these girls have experienced anything like this. I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve done this year. To make it to the final, it says something about them.”

It was a far different game than the season-opener for both teams, a 51-23 win for the Hearts.

“Naugatuck is no pushover,” Picard said. “(Cheney) did a great job with Naugatuck. We played them in the first game and we rolled right over them. But this game here, we had to work to win. She did a great job.”

Coleman seemed to be involved in every play on offense and defense for Sacred Heart. Whenever Naugatuck got close, Coleman found her way to the basket to give the Hearts a more comfortable lead as they were determined to be the team that returned the NVL title to Sacred Heart.

“It’s extremely important (for the program),” Coleman said. “Everybody depends on our boys to win something, but it feels good for a change for the girls to win something.”

There is more work to be done for both teams in the state tournament. Naugatuck, the fifth seed in Class L, hosts No. 28 Branford in the first round while Sacred Heart, No. 6 in Class S, hosts No. 27 Ellis Tech. Both games are Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“I think we’re going to do well in the states,” Picard said. “We have three (potential) home games. I think we will do well in those home games. If we beat Thomaston in the (second round), we will take care of business.”

Gilbert girls accomplish both goals (team wins; Wexler tops 1,000)

WINSTED – Gilbert School girls basketball coach Gerry Hicks had two objectives in the Yellowjackets’ first-round Class S tournament game against Bloomfield on Monday night.

One: Win the game. Two: Get Liz Wexler her 1,000th career point.

The senior guard entered what could have been her final game needing 17 points, three more than her season average, to reach the milestone.

“I was worried, especially after her last two league games when she didn’t score much,” said Hicks. “I told my assistant she’s not coming out against Bloomfield.”

Gilbert’s Liz Wexler. (RA)

No worries. Wexler eclipsed 1,000 points on a 3-pointer in the first half and scored 31 on the night to lead Gilbert to a 55-48 win. She has 1,014 career points for the Yellowjackets, who will host Trinity Catholic in the second round Saturday night.

Wexler became only the seventh girl at Gilbert to achieve 1,000 points. Ellen Geraghty tops the school’s all-time list with 1,839.

“What kind of sets her apart is her size,” said Hicks, who started as JV coach at Gilbert in 1981 and has coached six of the seven. “The rest were 5-foot-7 and above. She’s the smallest (5-3) and had to work extra hard on her game to get to 1,000.”

Wexler, whose motor rarely idles on the court, stood 5-3 and jumped center on her fifth-grade team. A high school growth spurt never arrived, so she has relied on fast breaks and 3-pointers for most of her output.

“The players I played with will be my friends forever.” — Liz Wexler

Her teammates, especially sister/point guard Jill Wexler, know how to get her the ball in the right spots. “Especially this year’s team, we’ve played together a lot,” said Wexler.

She led the Berkshire League in scoring as both a freshman (19.5 ppg.) and a senior (14.1), and would have gotten to 1,000 sooner if she hadn’t suffered a broken leg in a soccer game and missed all but one game (two points) of her sophomore season.

Before Wexler’s arrival, Gilbert won four games in four seasons and hadn’t been to the state tournament in eight years. In her time, the Yellowjackets have been to states all four seasons, even when she was injured.

“She was the catalyst who pushed us up and over,” said Hicks.

Here’s what Wexler, who will play next year at Division III Roger Williams, is proudest of: “My freshman year, we made the Berkshire League and state tournaments and we made them every year after that. And the players I played with will be my friends forever.”

WATERBURY — The shots weren’t dropping for the No. 6 Sacred Heart High girls basketball team Saturday, and especially not for No. 11 Old Lyme during their Class S second-round state tournament game at Alumni Hall.

Defense will always keep a team in the game, however, and the Hearts played good ‘D.’ Combined with the speed of Sacred Heart, it was enough for a 38-20 victory and a second straight berth in the state quarterfinals.

The Hearts will play the winner of No. 3 Putnam vs. No. 14 Lyman Memorial on Thursday at the higher seed. Putnam and Lyman Memorial play Monday in Putnam.

“We weren’t making the shots we were taking,” Sacred Heart coach Ron Picard said.
Some nights, the shots just don’t go in. The Hearts still ran their offense, and they found openings closer to the hoop.

“They were patient throughout the whole game,” Picard said of his players.
Sacred Heart drove into the teeth of the Old Lyme zone in the halfcourt, then looked to run off turnovers and missed shots.

“We have girls that can get to the basket,” Picard said. “(Old Lyme’s Jordan Lewis and Madeline Zrenda) were their best players, and we got them in foul trouble because we attack.”

The three-guard lineup of Aamya Rivera, Treasure Coleman and Mikayla Mobley kept getting to the rim. Rivera led the way with 13 points, Coleman had 12 and Mobley added nine. Hayley Tucker was the only other Heart to score and had four points.

At a late Thursday afternoon practice, Gerry Hicks reminded his Gilbert School girls basketball team of a piece of history.

“The last time Gilbert was in the quarterfinals was 1998,” noted Hicks. “We lost the game (to New Fairfield, 66-48). It was so long ago and no one remembers it except me.”

Now 20 years later, the 15th-seeded Yellowjackets have another chance when they visit No. 10 Sport Medical Science Academy in Hartford tonight at 6 in a Class S quarterfinal.

Liz Wexler, who recently scored her 1,000th career point, is the only senior on the roster for Gilbert.

“This is a new experience for them, and they’re very excited and enjoying the moment,” said Hicks. “They know that you don’t get too many chances and are real happy to be in this spot. They’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Hicks was glad to get in a practice Thursday after Wednesday’s storm.

“Two days off would have been really bad,” said Hicks. “I think it gave us a chance to work on some things. (SMSA) is a fairly good matchup. We’re both about the same aize.”

After road wins over Portland (42-40) and Parish Hill (39-28), No. 17 seed Wamogo also looks to make it three wins in a row tonight at 7 at Coginchaug in Durham in another Class S quarterfinal.

Wamogo coach Kerri Stolle was also glad her team could get in the gym Thursday to sharpen some skills.

“We needed to get a good amount of touches and get shots up,” said Stolle. “Coginchaug is definitely a talented team, 1 to 5. All of their guards shoot well.”

After scouting the Blue Devils, Stolle was especially impressed by point guard Virginia Benbow and guard Carly Lane, along with 6-foot-3 freshman Jessica Berens.

“(Berens) finishes well around the basket,” said Stolle. “On defense, we will have to be firing on all cylinders. Communication will be the biggest key, offensively and defensively. We’ve gotten better as the season has gone on. Our message to the team was to believe in each other.”

Offensively, Stolle feels the Warriors have balance, which should help.

“Early in the season, I saw a bunch of pieces (of the puzzle),” said Stolle. “We don’t necessarily have a standout. We do have it all together. When you look at our box scores, we have a different (top scorer) every night.”
