Housy, Highlanders both battling bug as BL final looms

BY STEVE BARLOW
WINSTED — Tonight’s Berkshire League girls basketball tournament final might be won tonight by the first team to get a clean bill of health from a doctor.
Both Northwestern coach Fred Williams and Housatonic coach Steve Dodge reported after their semifinal victories Tuesday that they had players battling illness.
The Highlanders’ Skylar DiMartino shook it off to score 11 points in a 35-33 win over Gilbert. Meanwhile, Mountaineers guard Sierra O’Niel was under the weather while going scoreless in a 42-21 romp over Nonnewaug.
By tonight’s 7 p.m. tipoff at Northwestern, who knows who else will be battling the bug, or at least the sniffles.
“It’s going around,” said Dodge. “(The outcome) is going to depend on who shows up (tonight) and who’s the healthiest team.”
Housatonic (21-1), the top seed, swept Northwestern (20-2), the second seed, in the regular season and held the Highlanders to their lowest output of the year in a 41-20 Housy win last week. Defense has been the key this season for Housy, which has only allowed 40 points once.
The Mountaineers also have a balanced offense. No one averages in double figures in scoring.
“The five people they start are all super solid players. They’re all good basketball players, and they’re a good team cohesively. They play really well together and they talk really well,” said Northwestern senior Emma Propfe.
“We have to shut down their shooter, Propfe, and also shut down the middle with (Northwestern junior Natalie) Lederman,” said Housy senior Caroline Hurlburt. “It will be a tough game. We’ll probably do the same thing, our 3-2 (zone defense) with our press. It should be an interesting game.”

Former Hearts star Treasure Coleman headed to Ivy League (Brown) next fall

By JOE PALLADINO

Treasure Coleman, the former Sacred Heart High basketball star who is now a junior at the Berkshire School in Massachusetts, has committed to play collegiately at Brown University.

Coleman, 17, of Waterbury, made her selection official Monday.

“I  am really happy, and very excited, to have this opportunity to go there,” Coleman said on Tuesday.

Coleman, a 5-foot-5 guard who was All-NVL and All-State Class S as a junior at Sacred Heart, transferred to Berkshire last summer. The team is currently 15-6, and Coleman averages 20 ppg. She recalled as a junior at Berkshire and will graduate in 2020.

“It was, yes, very different from Sacred Heart,” Coleman said, “especially being away from home. But basketball-wise it is very good. The games are a much quicker pace here.”

After sifting through scholarship offers from schools like Iona, West Virginia and others, Coleman chose the Ivy League.

“I thought it would give me the best opportunity after I get out of school,” added Coleman, who hopes to pursue a career in medicine, perhaps nursing.

Of her transfer out of the city, the Prospect resident added, “You have to be willing to make sacrifices and do things you’re not used to. If you step out of your comfort zone, it will pay off.”

Bristol Eastern bounces Naugatuck from Class L tournament

BY ED DAIGNEAULT

NAUGATUCK — It took fewer than three minutes for Bristol Eastern High to execute its plan against Naugatuck. It only took slightly longer than that for the Lancers to put things away.
Ninth-seeded Eastern scored the first nine points, and 19 of the first 22, on its way to an easy 69-45 Class L second-round win over the No. 8 seed Greyhounds on Thursday night in the Class L girls basketball state tournament.
The Lancers (15-7) forced 26 turnovers as they advanced to a Monday night quarterfinal at top-seeded Notre Dame-Fairfield.
“They leaked out a lot, and we didn’t do a good job getting back in transition,” Naugatuck coach Gail Cheney said. “Their shots were on tonight. They’re just an excellent team.”
Naugatuck (17-7) trimmed a 15-point halftime deficit to 12 on a couple of occasions in the third quarter. After the second time, the Greyhounds turned the ball over three straight times, leading to a 10-1 Lancers run to end the third quarter. That eventually became an 20-2 run into the fourth quarter that pushed the Greyounds into a 30-point hole.
Naugatuck was done in early by full-court pressure that morphed into a matchup zone in the half court. By the time the Greyounds figured it out, it was too late.
“We’re long, so that makes it tough,” Eastern coach Tony Floyd said. “That helps to take away the passing lanes. It helped get us going in the first quarter, got us a good jump start.”
Alyssa Roberts came off the bench to post a team-best nine points for Naugatuck. Sarah Wisniewski and Alissa McNeil each had seven. Ciara Collins paced the Lancers with 19 points.

The Pomperaug High girls basketball team rallied in the second half to eliminate Branford from the Class L state tournament in the second round with a 60-44 victory Thursday night in Southbury.
No. 22 Branford (10-12) led, 29-27, at halftime after going on a 10-0 run in the second period. But the sixth-seeded Panthers (17-6) outscored the visitors, 20-10, in the third quarter and held them to just five points in the fourth.
“Our defense stepped up in the second half. This was all a credit to our defense and our energy,” said Pomperaug coach Joe Fortier. “We went with a smaller lineup and just pumped up our energy. Maddie Villa has been hurt for most of the year. She came off the bench and was all over the place for us.”
Maggie Lee had 18 points for Pomperaug while Molly Flanagan had 14 and Villa and Alex Rafferty both added nine. Sophia Araneo led Branford with 22 points.
The Panthers host No. 19 Daniel Hand in the quarterfinal round Monday.
St. Paul 73, Parish Hill 27: Jade Udoh scored a game-high 19 points for the Falcons in a Class S second-round state tournament victory. Janessa Gonzalez added 18 points. The No. 3-seeded Falcons host No. 11 Bloomfield on Monday at 7 p.m.
Housatonic 56, Aerospace 17: The Mountaineers dominated in a Class S second-round victory against Aerospace in Falls Village. Sydney Segalla led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, recording her seventh double-double of the season.
The No. 2-seeded Mountaineers host No. 7 Trinity Catholic on Monday at 7 p.m. Housy has allowed a total of 32 points in two state tournament games.
“We are excited to play and test our defense. We are looking forward to a good home game,” said coach Steve Dodge.
Trinity Catholic 56, Gilbert 33: Jill Wexler scored 13 points for the Yellowjackets in a Class S second-round loss in Stamford.
Marcie Moreira added 11 for Gilbert.
Iyanna Lops scored 33 points to lead the Crusaders, who will face their third BL opponent in the tournament when they visit No. 2 Housatonic on Monday.
Old Lyme 53, Shepaug 44: Lucy Puskas led the Spartans in the second round of the Class S state tournament with a team-high 15 points. Abbey Harty chipped in 12 points. The Spartans finished their season at 11-12.

Holy Cross girls fall to Weaver in 2nd round

BY JOE PALLADINO
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
WATERBURY — The setup was perfect. In the Class M girls basketball second round, No. 12 Holy Cross hosted No. 28 Weaver, a team that had beaten Cross in the regular season. The Crusaders could avenge the previous loss, and then play a crosstown rival Sacred Heart in the M quarters.
You couldn’t dream it up better. Except, it didn’t happen.
Terra Fair scored 21 points for Weaver (12-10) with nine rebounds, eight steals, and four assists, while 6-5 sophomore Jenesis Perrin — yes, she is a 6-5 sophomore — added 14 points, 21 rebounds, and three blocked shots as the Beavers ran past Cross, 71-47, Friday at Tim McDonald Gymnasium.
Even Sacred Heart got beat, by Sheehan.
This wasn’t a happy evening for the Crusaders (18-7). Cross’ best stretch came late in the first quarter. Trailing 14-5, Holy Cross found its game and ran off eight straight points on a jump shot from Allie Brown, a hoop in the paint by Jenna Mowad, a free throw from Cayla Howard, and jumper from Maeve Perrone.
In the second quarter, a basket from Hannah Brown and a steal by Howard tied the game.
It was 16-16. We might have something here. But that feeling did not last long. Weaver held a stunning 46 to 30 edge on the boards, and that constant hammering wore down Cross. Defensively, the Beavers forced 32 turnovers.
“We got ahead of ourselves when we caught up with them,” said Allie Brown, “and it got into our heads. We did not play to the best of abilities, like we usually do.”
Rhonasha Stevenson added 15 points, with five steals and two assists, and Tahjae Young added 13, with three assists. The Beavers, who play an independent schedule, had too much.
“We played with a lot of energy, because that’s what we need to do,” said Fair, “and get the lead right from the start. We knew what kind of team they were from the first time, and we just stayed humble and gave it our all.”
Howard was the only double-figure scorer for Cross, with 17 points and four rebounds. Nadia French-Graham added six points and five rebounds. Allie Brown snagged five rebounds and had four assists.

Flashback: When Thomaston and Wamogo produced a hoops epic

They were icons of their generation, two of the finest basketball players the area has produced. Thomaston High’s Amy Matthews, the kid with the black sneakers who never met a challenge on the court she couldn’t answer, and Wamogo’s Tracy Stolle, the blonde sharpshooter who became one with the bottom of the net.

On the night of Feb. 2, 1994, however, the basketball journey for both still had many courts to travel, their rapidly developing legacies still a work in progress.

Matthews, a senior and already a state champion and championship game MVP, was a month away from leading defending Class S champion Thomaston to a third straight state final and becoming the Golden Bears all-time leading girls scorer with 1,578 points (since surpassed by Casey Carengelo).

“It was like, yeah it’s great but let’s keep going,” said Stolle. “My feeling is let’s keep playing.”

She would go on to become one of Western Connecticut State University’s all-time greats, finishing second on the all-time scoring list with 1,565 points; earning a spot in the WCSU Hall of Fame; and being selected to the Little East Conference’s 25th Anniversary Team. Matthews followed that up with induction into the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame on the same night as some guy named Geno Auriemma was inducted.

Stolle, a junior, was on her way to becoming the greatest scorer in Wamogo history and second all-time leading scorer in the Berkshire League with 1,924 points. She was one year away from a perfect 27-0 season and the Class S state title to go with the MVP award. She would go on to attend the University of Hartford where she is still in the top 10 all-time for three-pointers attempted and made in a season and free throw percentage.

The future held much in store for the two stars. But everything they were and were to become was on display on this cold February night. They produced an epic confrontation at the Thomaston High gym the left fans awestruck and created a lasting memory.

AMY MATTHEWS IN HALL OF FAME

By the end of the night fans, coaches and players would experience this: a double overtime extravaganza with Matthews and Stolle scoring every point for the teams in the two extra periods. Stolle would pour in 35 points and go over the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Matthews would finish with 34 points, 11 rebounds. She would score Thomaston’s last 23 points of the game and hit the winning foul shots.

The twosome were tied together by their basketball brilliance, but there were a few other things going on this night. Stolle entered the game with 968 points, well within reach of 1,000 points on a single night for her. She was also dating John Matthews, Amy’s brother.

“It was an interesting dynamic,” admitted Matthews. “She was almost my sister-in-law. She would come over to the house and we would joke around. We were always competitive with one another, but friends. We would shoot around and had the utmost respect for one another.”

The game between Thomaston and Wamogo became a mesmerizing dual between Matthews and Stolle. With Stolle pouring in 27 points and Matthews 23, the game was deadlocked, 45-45, at the end of regulation.

“I just remember me and her going back and forth,” said Stolle. “Amy would go down and do something and I would go down the other end and do something. Amy and I knew who the competitor on the other team was that they had to beat. We knew with Thomaston it was Matthews. Amy and I could talk to junk to one another but we were friends off the court.”

Nothing was settled in the first overtime. Matthews had a baseline layup to give Thomaston a 49-46 lead and Stolle answered with a three-point bank shot with two defenders on her at the buzzer to force a second overtime.

“She would score and I would score and at some point I just kept thinking how do I take it to the next notch, we’ve got to get ahead,” said Matthews.

Stolle hit two free throws in the second overtime to go over the 1,000-point mark for her career and put Wamogo ahead, 51-49. She was given a standing ovation and presented with the game ball. However the game and the duel had overtaken the milestone.

“It was like, yeah it’s great but let’s keep going,” said Stolle. “My feeling is let’s keep playing.”

“For me, it was don’t stop the momentum of the game. Okay, great job, let’s keep going,” said Matthews.

Matthews came back to convert a three-point play for a 52-51 lead but in diving for a loose ball off a scramble with Stolle reinjured her right thigh, which she had hurt in practice. That had caused a stomach ailment to flare up. Matthews spent her senior season feeding herself with a nose tube due to being unable to digest food.

Matthews came out of the game only to return one possession later and the duel continued. Matthews added a driving a layup with 1:04 to go for a 54-51 Golden Bears’ lead. Stolle answered with two free throws with 49 seconds left to cut the deficit to a point.

Matthews then hit one-of-two free throws and after Wamogo couldn’t convert, Stolle fouled out with four seconds left when ironically she was forced to foul Matthews, who hit another four shot for the victory.

“I think Amy decided, this is my gym and you are not coming into my gym and getting a thousand points and winning the game,” said Stolle with an admiring chuckle. “It was upsetting (to lose).”

“Everybody knew at the end of the game two people were going to have the ball in their hands, Tracy and me,” said Matthews. “It was my gym, my senior year. We just had to win.”

Stolle and Matthews have remained friends over the years and shared some cotton candy recently. Stolle is a school teacher while Matthews works for Neurostrategies in Clinical Neurobehavioral Services.

They have always respected their accomplishments and rivalry and will always appreciate the night they created a classic 25 years ago.
