BL girls basketball title on line when Northwestern hosts Housatonic

By MARK JAFFEE

The much anticipated Berkshire League girls basketball rematch is upon on as first place Housatonic Valley visits second place Northwestern tonight with the regular season in the final week.

The Mountaineers (17-1 overall, 16-0 in league) can grab the title outright with a win. They beat the Highlanders, 37-32, in the first meeting on Jan. 2. Since then, Northwestern (17-1 overall, 15-1 BL) has reeled off 11 consecutive wins.

Northwestern coach Fred Williams is impressed with the entire Mountaineers’ lineup, which includes 5-foot-11 freshman center Sydney Segalla.

“They’re a very balanced team. I wasn’t surprised that they are undefeated (in the BL). Anyone can light it up (offensively).” — NW coach Fred Williams

In the first meeting, Williams acknowledged that his team shot poorly from the field and foul line, and also recorded too many turnovers.

“But you have to give Housatonic’s defense for that,” said Williams, who noted his team scored two points in the second quarter and only three points in the third quarter. “We have to do a better job of passing the ball and hope we are ready.”

Housatonic coach Steve Dodge said his team is “super excited about the opportunity. We know what it means and the title is in our hands.”

The last time Housy won the title was in 2017 when it shared the crown with Thomaston.

The only blemish on the Mountaineers’ slate came last week, a 46-34 nonleague decision at New Fairfield. Housy rebounded with a 48-24 win over Gilbert and narrowly edged Lewis Mills, 39-37, last Friday.

“The loss to New Fairfield grounded the girls,” said Dodge. “They are a solid, deep team. We faced a stronger, deeper team with more speed. We learned a lot. We came back with a huge win against Mills and gained momentum.”

Keeping the momentum will tough against the Highlanders.

“Northwestern has good balance with low-post and guard play and you can’t key on a certain player,” said Dodge. “We have to be balanced on defense. They have a lot of weapons.”

The Mountaineers finish the regular season Thursday against visiting Terryville while Northwestern plays in the final game at Wamogo in Litchfield on Thursday.

The first round of the BL Tournament is Saturday.

The Highlanders have only three seniors: co-captains Emma Propfe and Sydney Sanden, along Harley Jasmin. The Mountaineers have six seniors: Caroline Hurlburt, Sierra O’Niel, Brierley Lloyd, Anna Coon, Christina Winburn and Madelynn Olownia.

Housatonic girls win BL basketball championship

BY STEVE BARLOW

WINSTED — The six seniors on the Housatonic High girls basketball team were around two years ago when the Mountaineers shared the Berkshire League championship with Thomaston.

But none of them had even been born the last time Housy won the title by itself. It was the pre-Twitter, pre-Instagram, pre-Hoop Zone era. Yes, it’s been that long.

But after his team had dominated Northwestern, 41-20, on Monday night to wrap up the school’s first outright BL crown since 1998, coach Steve Dodge said he thought this was possible when the season tipped off.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS HERE

“I have five, six tremendous athletes — no superstars, but they all wanted to play. They all loved the game,” Dodge explained.

None of the Mountaineers average double figures in scoring, but someone always seems to have the hot hand. On Tuesday at the Highlanders’ home, it was senior guard Christina Winburn (17 points) and freshman center Sydney Segalla (11) who provided the oomph on offense.

But it was the defense that won the game. Northwestern, the defending BL champion, shot 7-of-46 from the floor, a rim-rattling 15 percent. The Highlanders also turned the ball over 32 times while scoring a season-low.

“We were really focused on two players, Emma Propfe and (Natalie) Lederman,” explained Winburn. “They were the big threats and we had to shut them down. Defense was more our concern than offense.”

Lederman had a team-high nine points, but Propfe finished with just five, nearly 10 points below her average. Junior Skylar DiMartino, Northwestern’s other double-figure scorer, had only four points.

“We wanted to get them out of their style of play,” Dodge said. “It seemed to work. They never seemed to get in a rhythm.”

Housatonic (18-1 overall, 17-0 BL) sputtered on offense in the first quarter, too, leading 6-4. But Winburn scored six of her 17 points in the second period to pace Housy to a 21-10 halftime lead. Northwestern (17-2, 15-2 with both losses to Housy) was never able to threaten in the second half.

“They shot well. They defended well and, to be honest, it looked like they wanted it more than we did,” Northwestern coach Fred Williams said. “Once we dug ourselves the hole that we did, we couldn’t get out of it.

“It was just a situation where we weren’t ready and they were. They’re definitely the best team in the league, no question about it.”

NVL girls basketball tournament field set

By JOE PALLADINO

The Naugatuck Valley League girls basketball championship tournament tips off on Saturday. The eight-team field is set. The matchups are not.

The games begin at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross High School’s Tim McDonald Gymnasium on Ed Generali Court. Admission is $5 and the price is good for all four games. Yes, you can buy lunch, too.

The seeds are set one through six. One more game is needed to determine Nos. 7 and 8.

The top seed is St. Paul Catholic. The Falcons went 18-0 in NVL games. Sacred Heart, the defending champion, is No. 2. The Falcons and Hearts do not yet know their opponents.

The final NVL regular season girls game has Watertown at Crosby on Thursday at 5 p.m. A victory puts the Indians at No. 7 and they’d play the Hearts. A defeat moves the Indians to No. 8 and a matchup with the Falcons. Oxford will be seven or eight, based on the Watertown result.

Holy Cross is the No. 3 seed, and the red-hot Crusaders have won nine straight. Ansonia, the Copper Division champions, at four and Naugatuck at five, play the opening game at 11 a.m., and a better 4-5 game cannot be found. Seymour is No. 6 and the first-round opponent is Holy Cross. Just to remind you, the Wildcats beat Cross back in December.

Here is the schedule for the NVL girls basketball tournament:

Dwindling numbers hit many girls hoop programs, but none harder than Torrington

The season has ended for the Torrington High girls basketball team. The Raiders’ record was 2-18. This followed a 5-15 season in 2017-18. Torrington failed to make the CIAC state tournament for two straight seasons. A search through the CIAC state tourney brackets tells us that the last time that happened was 1983 and 1984.

BY JOE PALLADINO

This defies description. It is a matter of numbers. The girls program had 10 players this season. Last season it was 17.

When we sent out preseason preview forms, a number of coaches lamented that program numbers were down. That fact was never more apparent than during the city basketball jamboree back in December.

The city teams have often struggled with numbers, but this seemed stark: During a time out the Crosby girls surrounded then-coach Phil Lott, while the Crosby cheerleaders took the floor to rah-rah for the Bulldogs. There were 10 Crosby basketball players in the huddle. The Crosby cheerleaders had a fully stocked squad of 24.

Are numbers down for all girls basketball teams? Well, some. In Watertown, Jason Hurdle has 17 players. The Indians do not have a freshman team. In the best of times, Watertown had 25 girls in uniform according to former coach Ed Lopes. Hurdle said his biggest roster in five seasons as head coach was 22. The team lost athletes to indoor track. Yes, there are fewer basketball players, but it hardly seems like a program crisis.

The crisis is in Torrington. Numbers were precariously low in recent seasons for girls soccer and girls basketball. Head basketball coach Mike Fritch was stunned when only 10 girls turned out. For one of the most successful girls basketball programs in NVL history, this was shocking. The Raiders have played in the NVL tournament final eight times in nine seasons, from 2007 to 2015, winning twice.

“We typically had 20 to 25 girls,” Fritch said. “I have never seen anything like this in my 26 years. It is beyond explanation.”

Perhaps the shock is that we’re shocked. Kids have more athletic opportunities, in school and out. The days of the three sport star are over; specialization is in. Remember too, 15 years ago NVL schools showed up at the indoor track championships in a station wagon. Now, teams arrive in bus loads. It is wonderful, but, those kids had to come from somewhere.

The drop in Torrington, though, is extreme. In soccer, Mario Longobucco had no more than 17 players the last two seasons, and most had never played the game before.

The standard excuses these days are video games, jobs and a hypnotic fascination with social media. But as Fritch noted, more kids have crossed over to indoor track, cheerleading and dance. Again, nothing wrong with that at all.

Enrollment also plays a part. In 2012-13, the Torrington High enrollment was 1,103. In 2018-19, that number is 866. Torrington athletic director Mike McKenna said that kids have more academic options, and also, “Our big issue is the number of kids that leave the district from eighth to ninth grade,” he said.

In June of 2018, 349 students graduated from Torrington Middle School, but only 274 went on to the high school.

And remember this: The Torrington school board eliminated middle school athletics for two years. The programs were cut in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Brilliant idea.

“We cut sports for two years,” said Torrington Middle School athletic director Mike Fritch, that’s Mike Fritch the Younger.

The middle school programs returned this year. Fritch said that 150 athletes competed in the fall of 2016 in boys and girls soccer, volleyball and boys and girls cross country. The numbers were 120 this past fall season. There are currently 30 boys and girls basketball players, he said.

“Hopefully, with the teams back the numbers in girls sports will improve,” said Fritch the Younger.

Fritch the Elder said there are good players in the middle school, “But the issue becomes, will they come to the high school? Year in and year out we have produced some of the best kids in the league and played in some of the great games,” Fritch said. “We have great passion on this team. They’ll run through the wall for me. I only have 10 kids, but they want to be here.”

It is annual story: School boards haggle over budgets and threaten to cut sports programs, most typically in the middle schools. In Torrington, those cuts happened. The impact on the high school teams is obvious.

“Is it parental?” asked Fritch. “Is it coaching at the lower levels? If I knew I’d be a genius and I wouldn’t have this problem. But we will be better for it. We go to work every day, and work hard, and teach, and teach some more.”

And wait, patiently, for athletes to walk through the gymnasium door.

Winner moves on: It’s a big game in Beacon Falls Wednesday night, as 7-12 Woodland Regional hosts 7-12 Kaynor Tech. The winner earns a spot in the Class M postseason field.

The Hawks have won three of their last four games to set up this post-season showdown. The Panthers have won five of their last six games to get within one game of the tourney.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Northwestern, Housatonic advance to BL tourney final

By STEVE BARLOW
WINSTED — There are two kinds of basketball plays: the ones drawn up on the blackboard and the ones that unfold in real time.
The Gilbert girls basketball team wasn’t necessarily looking for a 3-point attempt on its final possession Tuesday night against crosstown rival Northwestern on Tuesday night in the Berkshire League tournament semifinals.
But that’s what the Yellowjackets got.
Dileysi Sarmiento’s shot from the corner caromed out, though, and the Highlanders survived with a 35-33 victory. The second seed in the tournament will face top-seeded Housatonic, a 52-21 winner over Nonnewaug, in the BL final Friday night at 7 at Northwestern.
“We drew up the play for me to get the ball and drive down court and try to dump it off to the post player,” explained Gilbert guard Jill Wexler. “But it ended up not working out that way. Dileysi had a wide-open shot. It just didn’t fall. If it had, that would’ve been the game-winning shot.”
Skylar DiMartino led Northwestern with 11 points, despite feeling ill. (“I got an email this morning from Skylar’s parents saying she probably wouldn’t even be here tonight,” said Northwestern coach Fred Williams.)
DiMartino had a chance to lock up the win at the foul line with 13.5 seconds left. But her free throw bounced off, and Sarmiento grabbed the rebound to set up the Yellowjackets’ final chance.
Dogged by DiMartino, Wexler drove down the court, only to find her path to the basket blocked by Northwestern’s Natalie Lederman and Jana Sanden, forcing her to dish to Sarmiento in the corner.
“We knew they were going to drive because they wanted to either drive and get the foul or drive, get the layup and the foul, too,” said Northwestern’s Emma Propfe, who had 10 points, all in the first half. “We knew we had to play tight.”
Jana Sanden sank the winning points for the Highlanders (20-2) on two free throws with 1:57 left for a 35-32 lead.
Angelina Delacruz (11 points) hit one of two foul shots with 1:42 remaining to pull Gilbert (15-7) within a basket.
Northwestern was ahead at halftime, 25-18, but the Yellowjackets outscored the home team, 10-2, in the third period for a one-point lead after three periods.
Housatonic (21-1) made quick work of Nonnewaug (13-9), which scored just two points in the first period, five in the first half and seven through three quarters.
By then, the Mountaineers had built a 31-7 lead.
“It was the same (defensive game plan) as every other game,” said Caroline Hurlburt, who led Housy with 14 points. “We go into it with our 3-2 (zone defense), then we do our full-court press. That usually gets us into the swing of things.”
Sydney Segalla added 12 points for Housatonic, which has won all of its 20 BL games this year. Maddie Woodward led the Chiefs with seven points.
“Like usual, we played really good defense,” said Housy guard Christina Winburn. “We held them to 21 points. Keep any team under 30 and it’s almost an automatic win.”
