Taft girls hoop team has strong local flavor

BY MARK JAFFEE

The Taft School girls basketball has a global roster with players residing as far away countries as Budapest, Hungary (junior Anna Csigirinszkij) and Quarry Bay, Hong Kong (Samantha Chan). Even the team manager, junior Zoey Zheng, is from Hong Kong.

The team also has a postgraduate, Amarachi Chidom, from Oakland, Calif.

“Amarachi is the nicest most charismatic kid you’ll ever meet and it’s a nice complement to our players on the court with her being 6-foot-2 with a lot of basketball skills,” noted Taft coach Jon Willson, a 1982 Taft graduate.

Though Taft is known to have an international student body, of the 15 current players on the varsity roster, seven come from Greater Waterbury and another from Bethel (senior Kristin Manfreda).

“Without players from Greater Waterbury, we would be a far weaker program,” admitted Willson. “That has been the case during my entire tenure here since I started in the 2001-02 season. Typically the girls basketball program had a lot of local kids, which is remarkable when only one-fifth or 20 percent of our students are from the local area. That tradition predates me. Dick Cobb, who I succeeded as coach, always had four or five local players and some were starters.

“This year, it’s particularly pronounced,” said Willson of the local ties.

They include Taft’s two co-captains — senior point guard Lauren Pelosi and senior guard Juliana Yamin, both from Middlebury. Pelosi has already commited to Amherst College for the fall.

“Lauren is a four-year varsity player and is just a good, all-around player,” said Willson. “Juliana maybe the best defensive player I’ve ever had. She’s as tough as nails.”

Waterbury native Kayla Robinson, a junior, plays in the front court, despite being only 5-foot-8. But Willson said that Robinson is “the most relentless player I’ve ever coached in my 17 years. She never takes a trip down the court off and dives for every loose ball and goes for every rebound. She’s been fantastic ever since her freshman year.”

From left, #12 Isabel Plant, #24 Natalie Hodak, and #31 Nevya Vermette of Holy Cross react on the bench, in the last few seconds, while losing 50-45 to Daniel Hand during the CIAC Class L Championship at Mohegan Sun. (RA)

A player to watch for the present and future is freshman guard Natalie Hodak of Waterbury. Hodak repeated her freshman year after transferring from Holy Cross last year.

“Natalie has been a big part of our success this season,” said Willson, who has guided Taft to a 7-3 mark. “She’s very young but a dynamic point guard. She’s only about 5-foot-3, but she battles, has great hadns and sees the court very well and ca knocked down the outside shot.”

Other key reserves from Greater Waterbury are sophomore Anna Koziol of Middlebury, junior Emilee Adami of Southbury and junior Margaret O’Leary of Waterbury.

“Overall, we have a lot of versatile and depth,” said Willson. “We’re not going to overwhelm many of the team we play with our skill, but we have a lot of unselfish players. They have no egos on the court. That (trait) is irreplaceable.”

Taft’s game at Kent School was postponed Wednesday due to the inclement weather. It will next play host to Westminster of Simsbury Saturday and Loomis Chaffee of Windsor Jan. 24. Both are at 4 p.m.

“If we can win those games at home, it will put us in the driver’s seat and be in contention to win the Founder’s League championship,” said Willson. Taft is curently 2-0 in the Founder’s League. Loomis Chaffee is the defending champion.

The 11-team Founder’s League doesn’t have a postseason tournament.

Naugy girls on a roll under new coach

BY MARK JAFFEE

As the second half of the regular season begins tonight, first-year Naugatuck High girls basketball coach Gail Strumpf-Cheney likes the way her team is jelling.

“So far, so good,” she said.

The Greyhounds (8-2) have won four in a row since a 43-34 loss at St. Paul on Jan. 3.
The only other blemish was a 51-23 loss to Sacred Heart in the season opener.

Naugatuck visits Seymour (7-4) tonight at 7 in a key Naugatuck Valley League matchup.

“Seymour is an excellent team and they are very well-coached,” said Strumpf-Cheney. “I think it will be an excellent game.”

And perhaps a measuring stick of how the Greyhounds will fare in the second half leading up to the Naugatuck Valley League tournament.

Strumpf-Cheney said she is using 10 or 11 players every game and that is leading to success.

“For us, every game a different player is stepping up,” said Strumpf-Cheney. “I live by the rule that if you practice well, you will get opportunities in our next game. The kids are working hard and are responding to that.”

Strumpf-Cheney, who previously coached at Oxford and Woodland, credits junior varsity coach Karl Evangelista and freshman coach Sean Dunn with helping to make the first half a success.

“When I came here to start practice, the returning players didn’t skip a beat,” said Strumpf-Cheney. “It was not a huge transition. They have been so focused and on board, and hopefully that will continue.”

Juniors Shannon Burns and Mia Rotatori, along with senior Alyana Sosa, are leading the way for the Greyhounds.

“We don’t have any captains this year,” the coach said. “We have such great leadership. It was hard for me to pick captains. I’m pretty blessed.”
