The state girls basketball tournament is set with a pair of area teams earning No. 2 seeds and another at No. 3.
The new format this year will crown five state champions, which led to few teams being eliminated. Terryville (2-18) voluntarily said ‘thanks but no thanks’ and opted out of facing the No. 1 seed in Class S.
Given the new qualifying rules (basically everyone into the pool), 42 teams in the tourney would not have qualified with the standard 40% winning percentage. Four teams with just three wins are in the tournament.
The highest area seeds are Nonnewaug (No. 2 in Class MM), St. Paul (No. 2 in Class L) and Holy Cross (No. 3 in Class M).

Worth noting
- Kennedy will face No. 1 Staples in the Class LL first round, an obviously daunting task for the Eagles.
- Pomperaug hosts SWC rival New Milford in the opening round of the Class L bracket.
- In the Class MM first round, Nonnewaug (which hopes to add the BL tourney title to its regular season championship when it plays Northwestern Friday) hosts Ledyard (5-15), which will make the cross-state journey.
- Speaking of long bus rides, Gilbert must travel to Old Lyme for its Class S game.
- Speaking of REAL LONG drives, St. Bernard (New London area) plays at Housatonic (NW CT area) in the first round. Pack the snacks.
