On Friday night, Michelle Vieira coached her first home game as Cheshire varsity girls basketball head coach. It definitely could have gone better.

The Rams fell to the Hamden Green Dragons, 66-39, in Cheshire’s biggest loss since Dec., 2014 (63-27 to Mercy). Hamden dominated from the get-go, led by sophomore Taniyah Thompson’s huge first half. Thompson had 21 points at halftime, more than all Ram players combined. She finished with 27.

For Cheshire, the leading scorer was also a sophomore, as Mia Juodaitis scored 12 points. Juodaitis had many varsity starts last year as a freshman, and is expected to play a key role in this year’s squad. Junior Sara Mulligan scored nine points for the Rams, and classmate Julia Schaff scored five.

The Rams are back in action Tuesday night, as they travel south to Career Magnet in New Haven. This is Cheshire’s SCC divisional opener.
