WATERBURY — Sacred Heart girls basketball senior standout Aamya Rivera got to within a point of 1,000 for her career on Monday night, then she missed the second of two foul shots.
Given Rivera’s ability to sprint to the basket, it seemed fitting that her 1,000th and 1,001st points came on a fast-break layup. Rivera needed eight points to reach the 1,000-point milestone, and she scored points eight and nine on an assist from Brooke Ferrare in Sacred Heart’s 75-52 win over Seymour at Alumni Hall.
Rivera’s clinching basket came with 1:49 left in the first quarter. The game was stopped and Rivera was recognized for her achievement. She posed for photos with her teammates and coaches, then posed some more with a fanbase that had congregated behind the opposing basket.
Rivera finished with a game-high 21 points and now has 1,013 for her career. Emily Ronalter had 12 points and Paige Carroll added 11 points for the Hearts, who improved to 4-0. Mikayla Mobley had eight assists.
Morgan Teodosio had 16 points and Arlinda Peraj added 11 points for the Wildcats, who fell to 0-2.
Rivera made a pair of 3-pointers to get to 998 points. She hit a foul shot with under three minutes left in the quarter to get within a point of 1,000, then made the layup to reach the milestone.
On the play, Sacred Heart forced a Seymour turnover, and Ronalter passed to Ferrare. Ferrare sped down the court, but noticed Rivera running on the right wing and got her the ball. Rivera finished the shot and got her 1,000th point out of the way in the opening quarter.
